Your Options

We Meet You Where You Are

Not every anxious patient needs the same level of sedation, and not every situation calls for the same approach. We offer a full spectrum of options and will help you figure out what makes the most sense for you before your appointment.

Nitrous Oxide

Also known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is a good fit for patients who are mildly or moderately nervous. A small mask is placed over your nose, and you breathe normally. You stay fully awake and aware, but relaxed.

  • Effects begin within minutes and wear off almost immediately when the mask is removed
  • You can drive yourself home afterward — no escort needed
  • You remain awake, communicative, and in control throughout your visit
  • A good first option for patients who want to take the edge off without anything stronger

Oral Sedation

For patients who need more than nitrous oxide, oral sedation provides a deeper level of calm. You take a medication before your appointment and arrive already relaxed. You may feel drowsy but can respond to instructions throughout your visit.
  • You’ll need someone to drive you to and from your appointment
  • Plan to rest for the remainder of the day after your visit
  • We’ll give you specific instructions about eating, drinking, and what to expect before your appointment
  • You may have little memory of the procedure afterward

IV Moderate Sedation

IV sedation delivers medication directly into a vein, allowing us to carefully control your level of comfort throughout the procedure. You remain conscious and able to respond to verbal prompts, but most patients have little to no memory of the appointment.
  • Ideal for lengthy procedures, complex treatment, or significant dental anxiety
  • Administered and monitored by our IV sedation-certified dentists
  • Your comfort level is adjusted throughout the procedure in real time
  • A responsible adult must drive you home and stay with you that day

Hospital Dentistry

For patients who need to be fully asleep for dental care — due to severe anxiety, complex medical conditions, or significant treatment needs — Dr. Acheson performs dental procedures in a full hospital or surgery center setting, with an anesthesiologist managing sedation.
  • Dr. Acheson is on staff at Sutter Memorial, Sutter General, Kaiser South Sacramento, and Fort Sutter Surgery Center
  • Dr. Soltani is on staff at Sutter Medical Hospital and Kaiser South Sacramento for patients with complex medical needs.
  • The same comprehensive dental services available in-office can be provided in the hospital setting
  • Particularly well suited for patients with medical conditions, disabilities, or extreme anxiety

Children's Sedation

Some children have extensive dental needs, behavioral challenges, medical conditions, or developmental differences that make in-office dental care difficult or unsafe without sedation. Our team will talk through every step with you before any treatment plan is set.
  • General anesthesia allows all necessary treatment to be completed safely, often in a single appointment
  • Prevents the struggles and trauma that can create a lifetime fear of dental treatment
  • We discuss all necessary steps carefully with parents before proceeding
  • Serving children with special needs, developmental differences, and significant dental anxiety

Full Dental Care in a Hospital Setting

Most dentists don’t have the training or hospital privileges to perform dentistry outside of an office. Dr. Acheson does. He has been providing dental treatment in hospitals since 1979 and is the only general dentist in the greater Sacramento area who can provide all dental services essentially in a hospital environment for both children and adults.

Dr. Soltani also holds hospital privileges at Sutter Medical and Kaiser South Sacramento.

When you’re treated in a hospital, an anesthesiologist is in charge of your sedation. Dr. Acheson focuses entirely on completing your dental care — the same services available in our Rancho Cordova office, just in a fully equipped medical facility.

What We Can Do in the Hospital

The same comprehensive care available in our Rancho Cordova office is provided in a fully monitored hospital or surgery center setting.
You're Not Alone

More People Choose Sedation Than You'd Think

Dental anxiety is one of the most common reasons people put off care. If any of these sound familiar, sedation may be worth talking through with our team.

Significant Dental Anxiety
You've avoided the dentist for years — not because you don't care, but because the anxiety feels overwhelming. Sedation can make it possible to get care you've been putting off.
Strong Gag Reflex
A sensitive gag reflex can make routine care genuinely difficult. Sedation reduces that response and makes even standard procedures much more manageable.
Lengthy or Complex Procedures
IV sedation lets us complete more work in a single appointment. Rather than spreading care over many visits, sedation can let us address multiple concerns in one session.
Difficulty Getting Numb
Some patients find that local anesthetic doesn't work well for them. Sedation works through a different mechanism entirely and removes the reliance on getting numb in the traditional way.
Special Needs Patients
Patients with developmental, physical, or medical conditions that make it difficult to hold still, follow instructions, or tolerate standard in-office care benefit from our sedation and hospital-based programs.
Children with Extensive Needs
When a child has significant dental work that can't safely be completed with conventional in-office behavior management, sedation — done carefully and with a thorough pre-treatment conversation — protects their long-term relationship with dental care.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Sedation FAQs

If you have a question that isn’t answered here, call us at 916-362-9247 and we’ll talk it through before you commit to anything.

Is sedation safe?
Sedation is very safe when administered by trained professionals. We carefully review your medical history beforehand, monitor you throughout the procedure, and use proven medications. Our dentists who administer IV sedation hold specific certifications in these techniques, and hospital-based procedures include an anesthesiologist dedicated to managing your sedation while Dr. Acheson focuses on your dental care.

We use a range of safe, established medications depending on the level of relaxation needed. Common options include nitrous oxide (laughing gas), oral sedatives, and IV medications such as midazolam. Our team tailors sedation to each patient’s health history, anxiety level, and the procedure being performed.

For nitrous oxide and local anesthesia only, you can drive yourself. For oral sedation, IV sedation, or general anesthesia, you will need a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you for the remainder of the day. We’ll call your driver when your appointment is wrapping up. By the following morning, most patients feel rested and back to normal.

It depends on which option we use. With nitrous oxide, you stay awake and aware. With oral and IV sedation, most patients doze and have little or no memory of the procedure, but remain able to respond to verbal prompts — our primary goal is your relaxation and safety. Hospital-based general anesthesia puts you fully under, which is appropriate for patients who need complete sedation for medical or comfort reasons.

Yes. Sedation and local anesthesia work together — sedation helps you relax and reduces anxiety, while local anesthetic ensures the procedure itself is pain-free. We use both together for the most comfortable experience possible.

There is a sedation fee that covers the medication and the monitoring involved. We don’t mark up sedation as a profit center — the fee is designed to cover our actual costs. We’ll give you a clear cost breakdown before your appointment so there are no surprises. If cost is a concern, ask about our in-house membership plan and CareCredit financing options.

Not at all. Dental anxiety is common — many of our patients choose sedation not because something is wrong with them, but because it makes care genuinely more comfortable and manageable. Whether you’re mildly nervous or have significant anxiety that’s kept you from getting care for years, you’re in good company here.

You don’t have to figure that out on your own. Call us at 916-362-9247 and tell us what’s been making dental visits difficult for you. Our team will listen, ask a few questions about your health history, and walk you through the options that make the most sense for your situation — no pressure, no commitment required to have that conversation.

You Deserve Comfortable Dental Care.

Don’t let anxiety, a difficult experience, or a complicated medical situation keep you from getting care. Call us and let’s figure out the right approach for you — together.
